Costa Rica national team squad at the 2018 World Cup Russia

National Team (national team) Costa Rica managed to make a surprise at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Being in a "hellish group" with England, Italy and Uruguay, Costa Rica qualified for the knockout phase as winners of two wins and a draw.

Two victories are achieved while frustrating Uruguay and stop the Italian resistance. While against England, the game ended in a goalless draw.

Next, Costa Rica ousted Greece on penalties in the last 16. Costa Rica's lunge unfortunately stalled in the quarter-finals when losing on penalties against the Netherlands.

Brazil 2014 became Costa Rica's best record during the World Cup competition. Throughout his participation, Costa Rica has four World Cup finals in the 1990, 2002, 2006 and 2014 editions.

In Russia 2018, Costa Rica's squad will be guided by coach Oscar Ramirez, a former Costa Rican footballer who took part in World Cup 1990 in Italy.

Ramirez has been appointed coach of Costa Rica since 2015 to replace Paulo Wanchope. Ramirez's capacity has been proven since the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers.

In the qualifying round, he managed to bring Costa Rica qualify as runner-up below Mexico and pack 16 points from 10 matches.

In June, Costa Rica is likely to still depend on Brazil 2014 hero Bryan Ruiz. Despite being 32 years old, Ruiz still shows a vital role in the Costa Rican national team.

The player appointed as captain is packing three goals in the qualifying round. In addition to Ruiz, winger attacker Joel Campbell and Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas are expected to at least repeat the Costa Rica World Cup success story 2014 edition ago.
